Hunting for the finest natural stones worldwide
Exclusive design concepts require unique natural stones in their implementation. Purchasing these in the necessary quality and quantity sometimes seems like magic.
Our colleague Thomas Möller – Tommy as the KMD-Team, suppliers and customers trustfully call him – supports us in this. He is our international Stone and Project Consultant. He discovered his passion for stone at an early age and crowned his training as a stone cutter and stone sculptor with the master craftsman's examination. Since then, he has been one of our favoured experts for natural stone.
One of the main purchasing markets for natural stone is Italy. Here Tommy can combine his enthusiasm for natural stone with his fascination for Italy. He is living in Verona for many years and from here he coordinates his activities in the sourcing of the unique materials worldwide. During stone selections he accompanies our project managers, customers and designers through the diverse world of natural stones and advises them on sampling. Natural stones that are quarried today in a high, luxurious quality are, in the worst case, no longer available in a few years for the implementation of design concepts or are only available in significant poorer quality. This must be recognised at an early stage and alternative solutions have to be identified.
KMD loves accepting new challenges and showing our customers unknown and breathtaking natural stones. Tommy always manages to turn the creative ideas and imaginations into tangible materials. His many years of experience, his knowledge and the trusting cooperation with our suppliers help him to do this.
Once a material has been approved for the design concept, Tommy is required again to select and purchase the exquisite natural stones. In order to realise the customer's wishes, Tommy sometimes travels to different continents to acquire individual pieces that fully meet the aesthetic design specifications. He inspects unique natural stones all over the world and selects the most beautiful ones for our projects. This is often based on a lot of diplomacy and years of trustful cooperation. With his experience, he can also quickly evaluate whether a supplier can deliver the necessary high quality in sufficient quantity. In the end, he often supervises the loading by a final inspection to ensure the quality of the valued goods.
"I love all stones" Tommy answers when asked about his personal favourite but he is most excited by those with structure and life. Stones where you can see directly that they are natural stones - not perfect and therefore unique like the travertine from Bad Langensalza (Germany) which he used to make his journeyman's piece. The connection to this natural stone remained and leads to a bit more of a sense of home in Italy.
